Quote: "First enjoy this time! Never again will you bear so little responsibility for your own survival. Soon you will have to take in food and dispose of your own waste, learn the difference between night and day, and actually acquire the skill of sleeping" (Currie Jr, 3)

Response: The context of this quote comes from the first page of the book Everything Matters by Ron Currie Jr,. The book starts off by putting the reader in a second person point of view as one of the characters. It talks about how when your in the womb it probably will be the most joyous time of your life. Its a time when you are not at all responsible for yourself, and all you need to do is eat and sleep. The book then seems to take a tragic turn of events when it explains that the umbilical cord has wrapped twice around your neck, but you do not have the slightest idea of this. I feel as if this book is going to be a good one. The reason being I feel like there's going a twist and turn on every page of the book.

Analysis: The author seems to make sure that the reader realizes that no matter what the situation that life may bring, no matter what the beginning, the outcome will most always be grave. " And with this happy occasion comes the task we spoke of earlier, a life long proposition which is likely to seem a burden to you, but which we encourage you to try to think of as a privilege, a great honor. First, though, you need to understand this truth" (Currie Jr. 8). The context of this quote is taken from the first mini-bio of the characters. The character to which the author is talking to has just been born and survived the umbilical cord being wrapped around his throat, and although he should be happy, the world is about to end. The chapter ends by asking the question does anything you do matter?

  1. Very interesting opening!
Remember, your response and analysis need to focus on the same quotation.
